I can’t help but notice that everywhere I go, I see the iPhone. I was ALMOST tempted to buy one when I realized that it CAN’T do one simple feature that I have taken for granted with my Windows Mobile Phones and Symbian OS phones. And what is that ONE feature?
Some background about my handphones. I have always enjoyed using Windows Mobile Phones ever since I bought a Motorola MPX200. I then jumped from one WM phone after another. Then I moved to the Nokia Smartphone E63 due to its ergonomics and ease of use. All throughout these phones I enjoyed and assumed that all good phones can do one simple feature that I have already taken for granted. And what is that ONE SIMPLE TASK? Ok, I won’t keep you guessing anymore.
That feature is the ability to access and control your text messages in your phone through your PC using a PC – Phone software. I asked my friends who had the iPhone if they can do that and they all came out with the same answers: either they don’t know, or they know that their iPhones can’t do it. Some even asked me why would I need that feature? You want to know why? Well, here’s my usual scenario:
I’m working on my workstation/laptop and I have my phone on the table beside my monitor or my laptop. My phone is connected to my workstation either by bluetooth or cable. When I receive a text message, I don’t grab my phone, unlock it and then read the text. What I do is bring up my phone software, then read my text message there. If I need to reply, I just click on the reply button and type using my full-size keyboard.
Sometimes, when I’m totally lazy, I just connect my headset to the phone, and when someone calls me I click “Answer Call” on my PC-Phone software and take the call. Or I can do it the other way around. I bring up my phone’s contact list and then select someone to call, and then make a call. All these done without touching my phone.
I tried researching about a software that can do this for the iPhone, but unfortunately, I only found one and it doesn’t work that well. Check it out here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/iPhone_PC_Suite.htm If you find another way to do this with the iPhone, please do leave a comment, seriously.
Oh well, you can’t have everything, especially with a phone…but the iPhone does looking tempting.
